Easy Sewing Machine Feet Storage Solution
I haven’t sat down at my sewing machine in a while, but I recently wanted to finish up some nagging projects. One required a specific sewing machine foot. But when I went to dig it out, I had forgotten I actually have a collection of no less than 20 different feet…most of which I gained when I inherited my Mom’s fancy sewing machine and none of which I could easily identify. Although I’ve had this sizable collection for over 5 years, I never took the time to figure out what they all were and what they all did, so they were just sitting in my cabinet in a plastic bag. After spending 30+ minutes Google-ing each foot (and determining I didn’t have the one I needed!), I decided to organize the feet in a way that allowed me to more easily identify them all next time around. This sewing machine feet storage solution turned out to be a quick project I wish I had done sooner, and if you have a large sewing machine foot collection too, this is one you’ll want to try!
I’ve said many-a-times that I’m not the most savvy sewer in the world…far from it! I pretty much do simple sewing projects for our home and mostly use the basic foot that came on machine (as well as the zipper foot and button hole foot on occasion). So when I dumped out my Mom’s hefty bag of feet, I certainly couldn’t identify what was what just by sight nor would I be able to remember each one even after looking them up!
So while in Michaels one afternoon, I decided to check out the bead storage section and found an array of options for storing teeny tiny things. I settled on this collection of snap-tight boxes (I link similar available options below). I loved that they were nice and compact, had clear lids, stacked together, and had different compartment sizes to hold various sized feet.
At first I was worried I didn’t have enough different compartments, but once I realized that I had multiples of the same feet, I was able to find a home for each one!
With the feet sorted out and organized, I wanted to label them so I didn’t have to Google them over and over again. So I grabbed my trusty label-maker and white-on-clear label tape and got to work!
TIP! If you too need to figure out what various sewing machine feet you have and what they are for, I suggest looking closely at the feet themselves. I have a Husqvarna machine, and every single foot either has a letter or 7 digit code engraved somewhere on the foot. Just by entering those numbers into Google and comparing images to my actual foot, I could identify every single one in my collection!
I printed out each name and then secured the labels to the side of each compartment.
Those larger compartments sure came in handy for some of my longer feet!
Now pulling out just the right foot for my projects couldn’t be easier…
…and the boxes easily snap together and store with my other sewing machine accessories!

This is so clever! I bet those boxes would also be good for
Pre-wound bobbins so they don’t come undone.
Now I want to know what a “Stitch In Ditch Foot” does!
Ha! That’s actually one of the feet I use! I’m not sure if this is the only use, but I use it when quilting a finished quilt…i.e., top-stitch over fabric that’s already been sewing together). The guide along the front sits in the seam between two pieces (in the ditch) so you stay in line with the current seams while top-stitching. Not sure if that description makes any sense, but that’s the idea!
Happy Tuesday!

If I only had that many sewing machine feet….:)
I love those for travel for my jewelry. Perfect for keeping everything separate. I hate having necklaces tangled. Thanks for sharing where you got them!
Great idea – Thank you!!
Thank you sew (so) much for this fantastic idea. It really is one of those moments where you think to yourself, why didn’t I think of that earlier? Once again, many thanks.
