An Easy Way to Label Chargers and Cords!
I have to admit, I stole this fun and easy labeling idea from my sister. In addition to her and her husband, she has three teenagers…and all of them have multiple mobile devices, each with their own cord and charger. To keep track of whose cords were whose, she wrapped different colored/patterned washi tapes around each family member’s set. Brilliant! Not only do I love this super quick, easy, inexpensive, and temporary way to personalize and label chargers and cords, but you better bet the little dose of pattern and color on a simple item I use everyday makes me a little extra giddy! If you have multiple people with multiple devices in your family OR you just love making ordinary items a little extra personal, today’s project is for you!
Even though it’s just Greg and I in our family, we’ve still amassed a sizable collection of white Apple cords for all our various devices. We’ve been known to snatch each other’s charger a time or two, so I gathered them all up…
…and pulled out some of my favorite washi tapes!
The wider patterned tapes sure are fun, but I also found these wheels of skinnier tapes ideal for this project. The skinnier tapes fit a little better on certain cords and other accessories, and you can mix and match colors for each family member. If you don’t want to invest in a ton of different washi tapes, one of these sets is a fantastic solution! (These are from Michaels, by the way!
Are you ready for the tutorial? Here we go.
Select which tape you want for which family member, and then wrap the tape around the white plastic parts of the charger and corresponding cord. You don’t even need scissors; just tear and smooth the end into place. Done!
Quick Disclaimer: I’ve had washi tape on my chargers and cords for years and have never had any problems. Please take care to only apply tape on the white plastic parts of the chargers and not anywhere near the metal/electrical components. As always, use this idea with your best judgement 🙂
You can use this idea to “color code” all the chargers and cords for each member of your family. Yet, another idea is to use the various tapes to label device by device. In addition to adding a stretch of tape to the charging cord, add a matching stretch to the device itself so you know which cord belongs to it. This may not be necessary for commonly used devices like phones and tablets, but it defiantly comes in handy in our household for things like the LeapPad, baby monitor charger, etc.
I chose to layer a couple different tapes (metallic gold with the skinny black and pink) to lay claim to my headphones, which a certain little 6 year old likes to sneak off with from time to time!
This is also a great idea for trips when everyone’s devices and cords end up thrown into the same bag and/or are all in the same hotel room!
Simple. Quick. Easy. Personalized. Temporary….and oh so fun! A labeling project doesn’t get much better than that, does it?!? If you have lots of devices, lots of cords, and lots of people, this really is a simple and fun way to keep them all straight!
