Coffee Break #55
Well, hey there friends! My sincerest apologies for the extended radio silence here this summer. As you’ll soon see, life has been a smidge…crazy…and I honestly had to put posting on total hold just to get through. But, I’m beyond excited to be back, and I am ready to catch you up on what’s been going on the last three months as well as what’s ahead here on the blog (spoiler: I’m back!)
What a Summer It’s Been!
I certainly didn’t intend to disappear from the blog for a solid 3 months (in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever gone that long without posting in over 13 years of doing this!), but this summer proved to be full (and exhausting) on so many levels. Let’s rewind!
Change of Command
The summer kicked off with my husband turning over his job as a Battalion Commander. While the whole family was indeed ready to turn the page on a very challenging, sometimes heavy, often rewarding, and always time-consuming chapter, it was also a hectic period of ceremonies, parties, and entertaining friends and family. Even after all the fanfare was over, it took us (all) a surprising amount of time to settle amidst the reverberations of a stressful few years.
House Un-Do
A change in job for my husband means another move for the family! But before we could move, we had to return our North Carolina home back into its original condition.
Over the years, so many of you have asked what it’s like to un-do all my hard work (it really sucks, actually) and how long it all takes (not nearly as long as you’d think). I tried to document much of the un-doing this time around, so I’ll be sharing more details in a future post.
But in short…we did a lot to this specific house so there was quite a bit to un-do. And by the time we were loaded up and ready to go, my favorite rental home (so far) was completely back to its boring and basic beige!
Doing the DITY
Speaking of loading up, at almost 20 years of military moves, we decided this was the year to try something new: a DITY.
(For those of you who aren’t military, this term means “do it yourself,” rather than relying on a professional moving company to do it.)
While moving is always busy and stressful, packing our own boxes and loading our own PODS added an entirely new level of effort (and time!) that we’re not used to. I actually can’t wait to tell you all about this experience because we learned so much!
FLORIDA!
In the middle of all of the house un-doing and box packing, we also squeezed in a family trip to Walt Disney World! Neither my husband nor I have been since we were in high school, and it’s a trip we’ve been promising and planning since arriving in North Carolina.
It was indeed a magical week and a welcome break from the moving chaos, but it also came with its own stress (the overwhelm of Disney proved a bit much for our 4 year old, to say the least). In the end, we were grateful to get in some dedicated family time, because when we returned home, it was time to execute move #10!
New State, New Home
For those of you who have asked, no I haven’t yet revealed where we are (now) living. I didn’t mean to drag the “announcement” out for so long (but I also didn’t intend to take the whole summer off). As I write this, we have made our way to home #10 and are (mostly) settled in. This move has proven to be (and will continue to be) different than most of our others. I promise not to play coy any longer: I’ll be revealing our new location this month!
(Hint: we are NOT overseas as many of you have guessed, but I did finally get to add a new State to our wall!)
What’s Next for the Blog?
I suspect that even just with a move and vacation and kids home all day, every day (ugggg, kids home!), most of you would understand the need for me to step away this summer. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t fully address the heart of my prolonged absence.
As many of you dedicated readers have probably been able to sense, I’ve been sitting on the precarious edge of total burnout for much of the last year. Content creation is an exhausting business that requires a more-is-more approach. Two+ years ago, I was chomping at the bit to transform our NC home, determined to “push the limits” of what was possible in a rental. And while we did just that, doing so resulted in a level of DIY fatigue and even disdain (gasp!) that I’d never experienced before. I began feeling burdened by the projects I was taking on and then even more overwhelmed by the process required to turn it into content for you.
While I attempted to readjust, scale back, and even just push through, I started to (reluctantly) acknowledge that my time as a blogger had perhaps run its course. Trying to figure out where I fit, if I fit, and even if I wanted to fit left me practically paralyzed (hence the total silence). Just a few months ago, I fully expected today’s post to be a farewell of sorts.
And then something happened: we moved. And as we settled into yet another new space, I found myself executing new tricks, hacks, and clever ideas to make this home work. I re-realized the joy and satisfaction I experience in making each home work just right; and I genuinely, earnestly couldn’t wait to share these new ideas with you. It became clear that walking away wasn’t the answer, but an adjustment no doubt needed to be made.
I’m not going to bore you with the soul searching, reflection, and research I’ve done this summer in order to navigate a way forward that feels right in my bones. Only time will tell if the changes I’m making on my side will result in me delivering more of the helpful and inspiring ideas you’ve come to love. But as I sit here now, knowing I was a breath away from being done for good, it’s refreshing to have a To Do List full of tasks I’m genuinely excited to tackle.
Admittedly, I’ve been embarrassed and worried about the long-term impact of taking the last 3 months off (Can I recover? Do I still have it? Will you all still be here?), but I have a hunch that my time away may turn out to be my most valuable spent yet.

To those of you who reached out over the last few months (and there were many of you!) and to all who didn’t but wanted to, thank you for your concern. I certainly didn’t mean to leave you “hanging,” and I thank you for affording me the space and time to figure out the best way onward and upward.

Glad to see you back and refreshed. Its always hard to work at a job no matter what it is when stress is overwhelming life. I’m also glad that you are enjoying your next chapter. Looking forward to being part of it.
So glad to see you back! Sometimes life can be overwhelming and we just have to stop and rewind. A break from our usual life can tend to be refreshing! Take care of yourself first and then all will be well!
Glad you are back and equally glad (Or more-so) that you took the needed time to refill and readjust.
I’ve missed your posts. Especially as I’d only just found them this year 😆
Welcome back and pleased you’ve had some time, to reflect on your own personal well being 🫂
From a lady in the UK that been living in the same house for 36 years (we did move 3 times, in our first 3 years of marriage, lol).
I’m so so so so so excited you’re back!! I for one do not care how often you post – do what works for you – whenever you post, I’ll be here to read it 😁
Congratulations on taking care of yourself. Looking forward to your new adventures..
To the readers…thanks for letting me steal Megan away for a few months! The family was stronger for it!
Sincerely,
The Husband Megan Made
If I could I’d give you a hug!

Don’t do it again. ;}
Thank YOU for sharing Megan and your family life with us, her readers!
I so love it when you comment here! <3 🙂
Good to have you back. I’ve had a busy season too, so maybe didn’t miss you quite as much as if you’d been MIA during the winter. 🙂
I’m in awe of Greg – does he ever roll his eyes when you come up with another project you need his help with? Or has he embraced “happy wife=Happy life?”
Still here; take as much time off as you need!! <3
Welcome back! Totally understand a summer “off,” but I always look forward to your content. I think I know where you are, as we were stationed there in ’18-’19. Is Jim Thorpe a famous name around there? 🙂
So happy to see you are back, and can’t wait to hear about the new home, and changes to your life. Love that Greg appreciates your work! Seeing the boys working on the reversals reminded me of being 7 years old, and Mom handing me a toothbrush to clean grout in a shower before we moved from Long Beach to Pearl Harbor. Seemed like those intersecting lines went to infinity! I will be very curious to learn what products were worth their cost, and easy to remove. Take care!
Welcome back!
As someone who recently did a PODs move (from the home of my final duty station to me final home after a 30 year stay in the last one), and using many of your moving tips, I survived it pretty well. I also spent the past 2 months in a travel trailer, moving from California to South Carolina and house hunting once I got here.
I look forward to your story on how the PODs move went and to seeing your new home.
Welcome back! I’ve learned so much from your blog posts. Though I’m not moving about, I do need decor change and ideas. I’m happy you and your family had a good summer and are now refreshed and ready for the days ahead. I’ll be watching for your new home reveal and more great ideas.
Hooray! I really am happy to see you back. We just arrived a week ago at our new post in Central Africa. The past couple of months I’ve been searching various posts on your site during our move prep.
I’m glad you are back, and I pray you can find the right rhythm for continuing to share your many homes.
Thanks so much for the update! As an “80’s Lady” (age-wise), I’m always interested in time & energy-saving hints so life can be more rewarding each day. Decluttering is even more important as the “what ifs” are looming ahead. Your sensible advice is uplifting & most are doable with moderate effort. You are very much appreciated 💐
Glad to hear you will continue . Refine the pace as needed.
Nice to see you back on my screen – always glad to read and see whatever you’d like to share!
You’re back!!!
I’ve been checking my inbox every Sunday hoping this move didn’t make you quit.
Whatever you decide (continuing or quitting) or however many breaks you take, your blog has been a source of real joy for me.
Drahá Megan, děkuji za Vaše příspěvky! Mnoho Božího požehnání na novém místě! Těším se na nové typy! S.
Glad you are back, and I look forward to your posts!
So glad to have you back!! The DIY playbook takes every summer off now that she has kids, and, as a teacher, I enjoy the summer break plus holiday breaks. I would much rather have your amazing content in quality over quantity so do what works best for you and yours and doesn’t leave you on the edge of burnout! Big hugs from Ohio!
You and your family have been very busy this year and it’s no wonder you needed to take some time to regroup. We are still here and ready to read any inspiration you have time to give us! Congrats on surviving a VERY busy few months. Hugs.
Sounds like you really enjoyed your sabbatical! I am excited to see you back in my inbox. Do what works for you!
So glad to see you back. I checked often, but figured times and seasons must be busy. I am glad you got to enjoy some family time. It goes way too quickly.
I will always come back and read, whether it is sporadic or often. Thanks for being real and sharing life. Enjoy the fall season. I can’t wait to see how you take your new space and make it home.
Coffee Breaks are my favorite posts. Thanks for letting us be a part of your life! You took time and focused on what is most important. The blog will reflect that and it’ll be okay. And when the time comes for you to shift out of blogging, we’ll be sad, but you’ll be okay then too.
I do always enjoy all the tips and great ideas you have. But, more importantly- I want to thank both your husband and YOU for your service and dedication to our country.
Best!!
Really pleased to see you back. Your posts are always welcome in my inbox, even if they turn out to be fewer and farther between. Family always comes first!
I know I’m here, and I’m sure many many others are also still here… plus new people who will find you!
I’m glad to hear your voice again , as this is hands down my favorite blog and you’re my favorite blogger! That said, you so you in your own time and way. Nothing is ever more important than the person (you!)
I’m glad to hear you’ve sort of bounced back from that mehhh state, but whatever the future holds I for one I’m grateful for everything you’ve shared so far and if you decide to stop this minute all I’ll have in my heart is gratitude and best wishes.

Glad you’re back and you were able to take time off. We just did a DITY move for the first time and had a change of command and relatives… it was a lot.
Even though we will only be here for two years, your blog has inspired me to make small changes and enjoy where I am now. Thanks!
So happy to see you! I’m also so glad you had the opportunity to step back and find what worked for you. You’ve been going constantly the last couple of years, Superwoman. This break was needed and deserved.
I’m always a few weeks behind myself in my blog reading, so I am looking forward to seeing what you’ve been up to! Yours is always a welcome face to see. xoxox <3
