You guys…if I were an emoji right now, I’d be the jazz-hands-smiley-face one…because I am SO over-the-moon-excited to finally reveal one of the big projects I’ve been working on behind-the-scenes for the last few months: a brand new The Homes I Have Made! I have been working with my favorite graphic designer and favorite web guru to give a big ol’ update to my little corner of the web. And while this has been a recent project, I have really been waiting for this update for much, much longer. Those of you who have been around for a few years may remember that about 2 years ago I made the switch from Blogger to WordPress. It was painful. It was traumatic. And even though I worked tirelessly to make it all right (and spent a lot of money and tears doing so), the site never really felt quite right. I finally decided it was time to let the old site design go (and the ugly blue header bar and all the bad memories with it!), fix the mistakes I made the first time around, and give myself a virtual home that feels much more me. The “new” The Homes I Have Made is still the same me, the same content, the same inspirations…just all presented in a fresher, faster, and prettier package! Let me give you a tour of some of my favorite new features!
In general, the site is laid out very similarly to how it used to be so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding what you’re looking for. That said, the biggest change most of you will notice right off the bat is that the main Home page now has excerpts of my 8 most recent posts. This will give you a quick snapshot of any new posts that have hit the blog since your last visit and/or help you quickly see if there are any older posts you may have missed! To read a post in full, just click on the red “READ MORE” button.
Once you click into a blog post, there are a few new features that will help you enjoy and share the post a littler better. Along the top, you’ll notice a floating toolbar that follows you down the page. That will help you navigate to any other parts of the site quickly and easily. Along the sidebar, there are quick links to my Project Galleries and Printable Shop. And see those grey arrows on either side of the page? They will help you move to the next post or previous post, so you don’t have to go back to the Home page every time. In the bottom right corner, you’ll see an icon that allows you to message me right away and an arrow that will scroll you back to the very top of the page in one click!
Down at the end of the post, there are a few features I’d really like to call your attention to. There is now an easy-click heart button that you can use to show me how much you like the post (it’s also at the top of the post too)! So many times, it can be hard to remember there are people out there reading, so a quick little click of the heart is a super simple way to show me you’re out there reading and loving what I’m sharing. AND! If you really like a post, I sure would love it if you used those social icons along the bottom to share my ideas on your favorite social profiles. Also, you may notice that the comment box doesn’t appear right away now. I still love your comments but wanted to try and clean up the bottom of the posts a bit. So to leave a comment or read what others have to say, just click the red “Load Comments” button!
The Home page and blog posts weren’t the only pages to receive some fine tuning. The Project Galleries are bigger and better than ever and now have their own navigation to make checking out all my projects so much easier!
Over the years, I’ve created some very popular blog series (and I have a few more coming down the pike!). To make these series super easy to find and reference, I now have them all under my new Workshops page. I can’t wait to expand what I have here!
There have been some other changes here, there and everywhere, but the last one I wanted to mention was to The Organization Toolbox. Gaining access, finding the printables you want, and printing them for all your needs is now easier (and prettier than ever). Be sure you head on over and check it out before you leave today!
I hope you all stick around, click around and check out the new site. I have some final tweaks to make here and there, but I think almost everything is working right (so please let me know if you see a bug I might not have caught!). I can’t end today without a huge thank you to the incredibly-talented and ever-patient designers that helped me with this transformation. Alison is the creative genius behind my new logos, colors, icons and branding; and Daniel is the tech guru who took all my creative direction and turned it into a site that looks and functions exactly as I hoped. If you need help with branding or web design, I can’t recommend these two enough.
With that, I’m going to sign off for today. Be sure to come back here on Friday because the celebration is continuing with a giveaway I think you guys will love. And in the meantime, leave me a comment letting me know your favorite part of the new site! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!
See you soon! ~MeganPosted In Blog Business, California '16, Personal Post
