On Friday, I showed you all an updated tour of our home, 3 months into our one year here in Kansas. I gave you a sneak peek of our laundry room, and today I am back with the full reveal! I learned in the last house that I really shouldn’t say “final reveal” here on the blog until I am doing our final home tour right before we move. Because even though I say things are done, I usually find myself making tweaks here and there as time goes on, and then I have to go back and tweak old posts. So…I think this laundry room is done, but only time will tell on that one!

Here’s our laundry room the day we moved in. It’s a decent size – I’d say about 5×9′ and even has a single little window. Our only complaints about the room are that it is through our downstairs bathroom and doesn’t have a wash sink/counter (we got so spoiled by that in our last house!). Still, it fits our machines and has a shelf for storage, so it will definitely work for the year!

Laundry Room Before

I honestly had NO intentions of making over this space. I swear! Like I said, it is tucked back through a downstairs bathroom, and not a place anyone will really see or visit. But when I stumbled upon the flamingo wrapping paper at TJMaxx, inspiration struck, ideas started rolling, and before I knew it I was giving this little laundry space a makeover. After a few simple updates, our laundry room now looks like this:

It’s bright and fresh and cheery and just so darn fun to be in. I certainly don’t love laundry days, but thanks to the flamingos on the wall and some other simple updates, I find myself looking for excuses to walk back in there and check it out. I’ll tell you more about the flamingo “wallpaper” next week as part of my Renter-Friendly Walls series, but I’ll give you a tour of the other functional and decorative changes I made in here today!

Just like our last laundry room, these oh-so-common shelves mounted high above the washing machines are great for storage, but are not the easiest to access. We’ve found that utilizing bins/baskets on the shelves allows us to use the shelf more fully, keeps everything nice and tidy, and makes getting things up and down much easier. In our last house, these white cube bins were numbered, and I used a number key to keep everything straight. That system was fine, but my husband really hated it, so this time around I went to my old standby: picture labels. After sorting the contents and categorizing everything into obvious groups, I played around in Cricut Design Space to come up with labels that would help us easily identify what’s in each box. I cut the picture labels from white vinyl and adhered them to the front of the boxes. (In case you’re curious, our categories are: vacuum parts | paper plates, napkins, cups, cutlery | furniture parts and accessories | bedding | party supplies)

Picture-Labeled Laundry Bins

Since we don’t have a counter, we were lacking a good landing spot for our laundry supplies. In an effort to keep from mounting anything else to the wall, I transformed a rolling toy cart from Target into a rolling laundry cart! Thanks to the addition of Duck tape and a handle, it matches the rest of the room and slides right into the empty space between the machine and wall! You can read more about how I made the laundry cart here!

I like that our machines fit in the space with enough room to hang items on either side for drying. I also re-purposed one of our metal wash buckets to hold dirty dish towels, cloth napkins, and rags throughout the week. Now this wet laundry doesn’t have to sit in our hampers, and when it’s time to run a load of wash, we can throw the rags and towels right in!

The “dirty” label is actually made from rub-on letters that I bought years ago! They matched perfectly, and I loved being able to use something already in my stash for this simple little detail!

Lastly, I put a flat-woven rug, also from my stash, on the ground to cover up some of the unsightly and ripped tile on the floor. Admittedly, I put it down just for the some pictures, but loved it so much it has stayed! All together, we now have a super sweet place to sort and do laundry, don’t you think?!?

As you look through the bathroom down into the laundry room, this is the view that greets you! Wouldn’t you want to scoot in and do some laundry too?

A majority of this mini makeover was done using things I already had on-hand. I spent about $10 on the flamingo wrapping paper and $40 on the Target cart, so for about $50, we have a charming and sweet laundry room for the year! You can check out the other projects in this space below. (I’ll add the flamingo wallpaper link next week!)

While this room wasn’t on my list of planned projects or makeovers, I’m so glad I spent the couple hours pulling it together. Like pretty paper inside your dresser drawers, this sweet little space makes day-to-day chores and living a little more special. There isn’t much in this space, but here are the sources:

Flamingo wrapping paper: TJMaxx | Cube bins: Target | Chevron rug: Marshalls | Metal bucket: Lowes | Rolling cart: Target | Duck tapes: Wallmart | Dryer balls: GlobeIn | Glass canister: Kirklands | Flower pots: Okinawa and florist | White change dish: Marshalls | Rub-on letters: Michaels

If there’s anything I left out and you’re curious, just let me know and I’ll get back to you!

I guess technically, this is my first “completed” room makeover here in our Kansas house, but like I said, who knows what updates will occur in the coming months. For now, though, I’m checking this box and calling it done (for now 😉

So tell me! What’s your favorite elements? Am I crazy to “wallpaper” my laundry room with flamingos? I’d love to know what you think below!
