Happy Thursday Friends! I hope you are all having a good week. I am a Christmas crafting maniac these days (I’ll tell why in just a sec!) and my head has been a constant stream of ideas and endless to-dos for the past few weeks. It’s nice to step away from my sewing machine for a minute to sit down and share a bit of what I’ve been working away on!
What’s all the Christmas craziness about? A few short weeks ago, I agreed to participate in the Holiday Tour of Homes held here on the military base we live on (it’s next week!) It was kind of a last-minute decision…I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off in time, but I couldn’t resist the temptation to show off all my hard work over the last few months to people in my own community. So…I excidetedly accepted and have been tirelessly working to not only get my holiday decor up, but also to complete some projects that have been camping out on my year-round decor to-do list as well!
Because I am working at a pretty quick pace (meaning, not a lot of time to snap photos along the way), I’m not going to have a lot of step-by-step tutorials for you. BUT…I am super eager to show you everything I’m pulling together…so consider these next few weeks your very own walk through my holiday home!
The first stop…our Comfy Cozy Family Room!
I, for one, often have a tough time with Christmas decor. Don’t get me wrong…I love the glitter and the lights and the festive accessories as much, if not more, than the next gal. It’s the clutter that drives me batty. After a few days of having everything pulled out, I always want to rush and put it all away before Saint Nick even comes down the chimney. Sad, huh? I wanted this year to be different. I wanted to enjoy our holiday decor, I wanted it to enhance (not detract) from our everyday decor, and I wanted it to appear seamless versus smacking me in the face every time I walked into the room.
To achieve those things, I tried a very different approach this year: using the room’s color scheme to dictate the holiday decor! I started with these pillows…
Lots more photos after the jump!
To bring in the holiday spirit without it feeling too clunky or cheesy, I chose to use our family room’s palette of whites, greys, and silvers with small doses of blue throughout the room. I was so fixated on the idea of making these silhouette pillows that they were the very first project I tackled! They are made of felt and fleece (such cozy fabrics) and have an envelope back for easy assembly (and quick on and off!). I used my cricut to cut out the shapes and then traced them onto the felt and appliquéd them to the fleece. I made four versions:
And the JOY pillow:
While I was on a pillow kick, I went ahead and crossed off a project from my “everyday decor” list too…these gorgeous blue and silver throw pillows. I picked up this fantastic blue pin stripe from a local shop for $7/yard. I used some of it to make coordinating piping (such a pain but totally worth it!) and finished off the back using the other curtain panel from our ottoman project! Even though I had other things calling my attention, I am so glad to have these pillow done!
I added a fleece throw (from IKEA for $4) and the couch quickly felt like a cozy winter wonderland!
The other elements in the space are some simple trees and reindeer I added to our new media stand. Again, I didn’t want to clutter the space with greenery and too many knick knacks…it might seem a little sparse in the photos, but in person, the balance is spot on!
The reindeer are from a local shop; the tall silver tree is from Marshalls, the short pin-stripe trees are from IKEA, and the polka dot trees I made myself with some leftover fabric from the luggage tag project!
I just love seeing them peaking out at me!
Whites, greys, and silvers in a variety of shades and textures make it visually interesting!
A nice and clean, yet cozy and festive family room to enjoy the holiday season!
There you have it – your first stop on our holiday home tour. Not sure yet what the next stop will be, but I’ll have pics of another space up for you on Monday – I promise! Hope you all have a great weekend…are you working on anything fun and festive? Let me know – I might need some more ideas!!!Posted In DIY Decor, North Carolina
