Modern Home Office and Craft Space Reveal

It’s time for another “final” room reveal as we wrap up our time here in Kansas. You can catch up on the Laundry Room, Deck, Henry’s Bedroom, and Playroom so far; and this time, we’re recapping one of my favorites spaces in our home and certainly the room I spend the most time in. Let’s have a look around my modern home office and craft space!

The fourth bedroom in this house is on the lower level of our split-level home, just off the downstairs family room that we use as playroom. In all honesty, this large, dedicated room right off the playroom was one of the main things that sold me on this house. I just knew the layout would allow me to work and Henry to play almost side-by-side without being in each other’s space too much. Here’s a good look at the bare bones of the room the day we arrived last summer!

In addition to a nice-sized closet, two walls of the room have an 8″ ledge that come in VERY handy on a regular basis!

With literally just a handful of DIY projects, this room went from being a boring spare bedroom to a stunning studio space that I love to be and work in every day. Come on in and have a look around!

(As I do in all my room reveal posts, the sources and tutorials for everything you see here are linked up at the bottom of the post!)

After missing the mark in my past craft spaces, I finally feel like I landed on a layout that allows me to create, photograph, and work at the computer in a really comfortable and natural way thanks to three separate “stations.” This room is a very generous size, and it’s not lost on me how lucky I am to have such a spacious and pretty place to create and work.

The wallpaper used on the top half of the wall is easily the most eye-catching feature in the room. I was really nervous to use such a bold pattern in such a big way, but it totally made the room and is one of my all-time favorite wall treatments I’ve ever done. With such a busy pattern on the walls, I was able to keep all the other room elements white and simple (which is great for project photos!).

Next to the wallpaper, the main focal point of the room is the craft counter underneath the single window. When we moved in last summer, I finally got to swap the dark counter we used to have for a white one, and boy does it make such a visual difference.

The cabinets (which are just off-the-shelf kitchen cabinets from Lowes) are filled with a majority of my small craft supplies and notions stored in a variety of containers, bins, baskets and trays. I literally repeated my storage solutions in these cabinets from our last house so you can read about them here. #ifitaintbroke

Easy and functional craft storage solutions.

There is so much about this room that I love, but the one and only thing that is really a headache for me is the single, short, east-facing window. Taking photos for the blog revolves heavily around the availability of light, and I am constantly racing the clock each and every day. At about 11:00am, the sun goes over the house and I lose pretty much all my light in here. This makes scheduling and getting projects done quite a challenge. I’ve now learned that when deciding which room in the house will be my home office, the windows and light need to be considered in addition to the size and storage!

I learned in my North Carolina craft room that I did like crafting at the counter but I didn’t enjoy sewing at it…it’s just too high. This time around, I bought a super inexpensive yet very versatile white table from IKEA, and it is one of the best things I did in this space. While the main purpose of this table is for my sewing machine(s), I use it for SO much more! From staging photos, photographing printables, to crafting with Henry and so much more…it is always covered in projects! When my sewing machines aren’t in use, they tuck in perfectly under the table; and the table is lightweight enough that I can drag it around to room to get the best light possible. Best $50 I spent in this room!

Check out this modern home office and craft space full of smart storage solutions, a hardworking layout, and vibrant design details!

I take a lot of my blog photos standing over the white table and quickly identified the need for a stool. Instead of leaving a wooden IKEA stool as is, I gave it a makeover with blue stain and pretty floral peel-and-stick wallpaper! The white table and stool combo are a total winner and something I will be repeating in the next house!

Cover an IKEA stool in colorful wallpaper to make a perfectly tailored room accessory!

Another thing I learned in my previous craft spaces is that I don’t like having my craft supplies out in the open. Don’t get me wrong, I love the look of pretty ribbons and fabrics as much as the next crafter, but I always found myself craving a calmer and less-cluttered crafting space when it actually came time to make things. With so many projects often strewn across all open surfaces, having supplies neatly tucked away allows me to keep some order in this busy space!

We took down the wire shelf that was in this closet (and stored it for move out) and added a 4×4 IKEA Kallax as well as more cube shelving to the ceiling. This allowed me to stuff in store a ton of fabric, paper, thread, ribbon and other supplies!

Check out this modern home office and craft space full of smart storage solutions, a hardworking layout, and vibrant design details!

I use 8 white DRONA bins to store my fabric collection and 8 Y-weave baskets from Target to hold ribbon, thread, yarn and other bulkier craft supplies that don’t fit under the counter across the room. The labels were made with a combination of extra wallpaper, vinyl, cardstock and washi tape!

Check out this modern home office and craft space full of smart storage solutions, a hardworking layout, and vibrant design details!

I absolutely LOVE having all my fabric in these deep bins. Not only do they hold a TON of fabric, but they function like drawers…so it’s easy to slide a bin out, pull out what I need, and easily put everything away.

Check out this modern home office and craft space full of smart storage solutions, a hardworking layout, and vibrant design details!

Wrapping my fabric onto mini cardboard “bolts” keeps the bins tidy and makes finding just what I need super easy!

Along a top row of cube shelves in the closet, I have 10 12×12 scrapbook boxes that hold a variety of papers, cartridges, vinyls, manuals and more. Washi tape labels help me keep all the bins straight.

Thanks to a variety of storage solutions, I am really able to store a ton of craft supplies in a totally accessible yet easily concealable way. Success!

Tucked next to the closet is a grey armoire I bought in Kansas City’s famous West Bottoms district. I was originally looking for a similar piece that was undone and in need of a makeover. But then I found this one, already painted, for an amazing price. Needless to say, it didn’t take long for me to bring it home. I’m so glad I did because it’s one of the hardest working pieces of furniture in our home!

On top of the dresser, we have our printer, a few accessories and some over-sized art I made on the cheap.

But behind those doors is an entire office worth of supplies neatly organized and tucked away!

Using an armoire is a clever and effective way to store office supplies!

One of my favorite DIYs of our whole year here are the paper drawer dividers I made to organize these flat drawers. I was able to create perfectly customized and tailored dividers to hold every last supply in a perfect way…all with sheets of pretty cardstock!

Using an armoire is a clever and effective way to store office supplies!

The top three drawers hold all of our small office supplies, and the bottom drawers hold a variety of papers and small office electronics. Having a centralized place for all of our office supplies makes it so much easier for the whole family to find what they’re looking for!

The last wall is the office side of the room and where I spend a majority of my time!

We sold our heavy, clunky black desk (that I never liked) after finding this sleek and simple white version on clearance at a local store. We currently have the desk positioned flat against the wall, but it can rotate into an L formation, making it a super flexible furniture piece for our lifestyle!

Check out this modern home office and craft space full of smart storage solutions, a hardworking layout, and vibrant design details!

The shelves attached to the desk are a bit low to fit in any storage systems, but since we use the nearby armoire for supplies, they work great for holding books and decorative boxes (for receipts and paperwork).

A new office chair was on the “To Find” list when I dragged this one down from our dining room. The height and size and comfort were perfect…so it stayed!

This spot is where I sit and work at all hours of the day…early in the morning, while Henry’s at school and late into the night. Photos are edited, posts are written, printables are designed, and emails are responded to all right here. Admittedly, this spot is usually running over with printable drafts, to-do lists and project notes, but my planner and thrifted To-Do memo holder help me keep track of the important stuff!

To keep my work surfaces as clear as possible, I like to pin things up whenever I can. As such, I created this extra-large pin board to go over the desk. Not only does it provide a major punch of color for this side of the room, but it also gives me ample space to keep track of ideas, papers, my blog schedule and more. I use the heck out of this pin board and dry-erase surface. My only regret? The bright pink…I’m not sure I really made it work.

In recent weeks, I’ve been reflecting on our year here and the projects/room makeovers I was able to accomplish. It doesn’t feel like I’ve done all that much, but when I do these room recap posts, I’m reminded (and kind of blown away) of how far we really have come in less than a year. More than any other room in this house, this one was pretty much made from scratch since moving in last June, with very little carried over from our last house.

How to Make a Coloring Caddie from an Old Toolbox

As we get ready to take this house apart in preparation for our upcoming move, I’ve been running around taking pictures of all the “finished” spaces. And as I’ve been snapping every last detail for the final room reveal posts, I’ve come across a few projects that were supposed to be shared here on the blog but somehow slipped through the cracks! Today’s project is one of those…and since it’s been working SOO well for us this year, I wanted to make sure I shared the idea so you can try it too! Today I want to show you how easy (and functional!) it is to make a coloring caddie from an old toolbox!

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

I love putzing through thrift and antique stores whenever I can…and without fail, I always come across old wooden toolboxes or caddies. I swear, I’ve found them in every size, shape and price point; and I always want to scoop them up because I can think of so many handy uses for them (besides tools!) A few years ago, I came across this long wooden toolbox in a local thrift store. The size was great, but the handle really prevented me using it for anything that wasn’t long and flat. So I could use it better, I simply sawed off the handle and gave it a few fresh coats of spray paint to create a countertop caddie…

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

In our last home, it was PERFECT for holding all of our laundry supplies! (You can see more of that laundry room here.)

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

When we moved into this house last summer though, we didn’t have a laundry room counter and therefor didn’t really need the caddie to hold our laundry supplies anymore. I did, however, really want to set up an art station for Henry in our playroom. I knew with a few quick cuts of foam and paper, this toolbox could easily be repurposed yet again into a coloring caddie!

If you would like to do a similar project, here is what you need:

*This post contains affiliate links, which means I make a small commission off the sales at no extra cost to you. You can read more about my policies here.

Start by measuring the width and depth of the INSIDE of your toolbox base. Then using a ruler and X-acto knife, trim a sheet of foam core down to the corresponding dimensions.

TIP: Because these foam core sheets will essentially stand up on their own against the sides of the toolbox, it helps to cut them just a smidge too big.

Before going on, test the dividers in your toolbox to ensure they are tight enough against the sides and will stand up on their own!

You can certainly leave your dividers plain, but to camouflage that they are foam core AND make them a little more durable, I wrapped mine in some leftover wallpaper I had on hand (from this project). Start by cutting strips of paper the exact same width as your foam dividers…but don’t worry too much about the length…

If your paper doesn’t already have adhesive on it, use some Mod Podge to coat the back of the paper strips…

Then place one of your foam dividers along the edge of one of the paper sheets and fold the foam divider down the paper so that the paper covers the both sides as well as the top edge of the divider.

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

Use a craft knife or rotary cutter to trim away the excess paper along the bottom of the divider! Quick and easy without the hassle of a lot of measuring!

When the dividers are wrapped and dry, slide them into the toolbox to create compartments. Use your various coloring supplies to determine how big to make each section so that it’s perfectly tailored to what you need to store!

If your kiddos are big enough, place the caddie out in the open to encourage coloring and creativity! Ours’ was placed on a table right behind the sofa in our playroom. Not only does it keep all of our coloring tools easily accessible, but it also provides a place to catch remote controls and tissues!

When I first made this caddie, I honestly wasn’t sure how well it would hold up or how much it would get used. My little Henry is not much of a colorer, but having these markers and crayons out in the open has really encouraged him to color more. Boy do I love coming down the stairs and seeing this…

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

What’s more…it’s been so great to have this for playdates and gatherings. Even though Henry isn’t an avid colorer, a lot of his friends are and it helps to have our supplies out and ready for use whenever they come over!

Find an old wooden toolbox in your favorite antique store? Use this simple method to transform it into the perfect coloring caddie!

I’m always amazed at how well some of the simplest projects hold up and function over time! All these months later, this coloring caddie (including the foam dividers!) has held up perfectly. We’ve rearranged the caddie a few times to adjust to our always-fluctuating stash….but all in all…this was one inexpensive and successful repurposing project!

I’d love to know…do you have coloring supplies out in the open for your kids? What do you use to corral them? Have you repurposed an old toolbox into something really useful? I have a feeling this toolbox will continue to see different functions as we move from home to home. Next time you see one at your local junk store, grab it and experiment with different ways to use it!

I hope your week is off to a great start! I’ll see you back here on Thursday with my next Renter-Friendly walls post…see you then!

3 Creative Ways to Use Spice Jars (with MagnetJar!)

Not every product review proposal that lands in my Inbox is a great fit for me, our home, this blog and my readers; but every now and then I come across something that I can’t wait to try myself AND share with you all. Let me introduce you to MagnetJar – beautiful glass spice jars with…wait for it…magnets on the back…making for the ultimate vertical storage solution! I am so crazy excited about this product, I couldn’t stop using them around our home to organize a variety of things. Today, I not only want to introduce you to these jars and this great company, but also show you three creative ways to use spice jars all around your home!

MagnetJars are clear, glass spice jars with heavy-duty magnets secured to the back! They are perfect for holding spices, craft supplies, hardware and more!

This FREE 5-week email course will help you clean out and improve function in EACH area of your kitchen!

MagnetJar is a new, American-based company…literally born in a Pennsylvania kitchen this last Christmas. It’s owner, Marc, was trying to prepare holiday treats with his Mom when he became exasperated by his Mother’s spice storage situation. A guy after my own heart, he wanted to make use of the available vertical space on his Mother’s refrigerator to keep the spices more accessible, but struggled to find magnetic spice jars that 1) were strong enough to stay in place, 2) held a decent amount of spices, and 3) looked and functioned like normal spice jars with a shaker top. His frustration turned to experimentation, which then turned into a new company! He has now launched MagnetJar…a wonderful line of jars that look as good as they work!

MagnetJars are clear, glass spice jars with heavy-duty magnets secured to the back! They are perfect for holding spices, craft supplies, hardware and more!

One thing I love about these jars is that their design was dictated by function first! The flip-top shaker caps are easily removable for refilling and scooping, and are corrosion- and leak-resistant. The jars are square (instead of round) to maximize volume, and their super strong magnets resist jostling and attach vertically to any magnetic surface. The magnets on the jars are called “channel magnets,” and are uniquely strong…in fact a single magnet used on a MagnetJar can hold nearly 10 pounds! MagnetJars are also made with mostly American Industry (the caps are from Washington and Illinois, the jars are from California, the magnets are from New York, and the adhesive is from a company in Germany; the jars are assembled in New York). MagnetJars are available in quantities of 6 with the option for white, yellow, green or red caps.

MagnetJars for Holding Spices

When I set out to play with my new MagnetJars, my first step was obviously the kitchen. They are indeed designed for spices after all! You all know I’ve been longing for a practical yet pretty spice storage solution for a while now (I even lamented over it here), and you better bet these jars had me swooning!

MagnetJars are clear, glass spice jars with heavy-duty magnets secured to the back! They are perfect for holding spices, craft supplies, hardware and more!

One of my biggest struggles with transferring spices to new jars in the past was they never seemed to hold an entire bottle of spices. Transferring my spices to smaller jars required me to store the excess somewhere else, which somewhat defeated the whole purpose. I had a brand new, unopened jar of Italian Seasoning in my spice basket, and was beyond thrilled to see the entire bottle fit comfortably in the MagnetJar!

MagnetJars are clear, glass spice jars with heavy-duty magnets secured to the back! They hold a single jar of spices perfectly!

Transferring the spices out of their containers into matching jars means that you loose the label. I certainly could have used the chalkboard labels that come with the jars, but instead went back to my tried-and-true method of labeling: washi tape + clear label tape. Works and looks great every time!

Quickly and easily label spice jars with washi tape and a label maker!

True to the magnet description, those suckers are strong. I had no issue securing the jars to any magnetic surface around the kitchen!

MagnetJar spice jars are a great way to keep frequently-used spices always handy and at the ready!

The jars come in sets of 6. And while I would certainly love to bottle up all my spices and create a big fancy and functional spice display, I found that even having just my 6 most commonly used spices SO handy right next to the stove was pretty, darn great!

MagnetJar spice jars are a great way to keep frequently-used spices always handy and at the ready!

MagnetJar spice jars are a great way to keep frequently-used spices always handy and at the ready!

These jars would be awesome stuck right to the nearby refrigerator, but I chose to setup mine on a little magnetic board next to my oils and vinegars. I can quickly and easily pin up a recipe or note, and now I have most of my dinner preparation supplies in one tidy (and oh so pretty!) spot!

MagnetJars for Holding Hardware

Using MagnetJars for spices is really just the beginning for these great little guys. My next stop was our garage!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize hardware to keep them always at the ready!

Time and time again, I sing the praises of vertical storage. Not only does storing items on the wall keep things tidy and always-accessible, but it also helps maintain a clear work surface so you can actually be productive! Out in our garage, we are currently using little drawers to hold all of our various nuts, bolts, screws and nails. For fun, I played around with these jars for our hardware storage and was instantly smitten that I could see and find whatever I needed without having to open lots of little drawers! #itsthelittlethings #nopunintended!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize hardware to keep them always at the ready!

I’ve sung the praises of the strength of these magnets already, but here is some pretty great proof! These nails and screws aren’t light…and these jars didn’t budge a bit!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize hardware to keep them always at the ready!

You may not think you have a lot of magnetic surfaces in your garage, but that shouldn’t keep you from giving this storage solution a try! Jars can be attached to extra refrigerators/freezers, metal toolboxes or even large metal sheets you can get at the hardware store. I have my strips attached to a simple metal strip from IKEA!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize hardware to keep them always at the ready!

MagnetJars for Holding Crafts

Of course, my last stop for these awesome jars had to be my craft room! I am constantly looking for easy and convenient ways to store the items I use the most, and these jars couldn’t be more perfect!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize small craft supplies and notions to keep them handy and always at the ready!

I am struggling so much lately with having too many items on my work surfaces, and I really need to start making better use of vertical storage options. From pins and bobbins, clips to pens, I can think of dozens of things that would be so handy to have secured up right in front of me…easily available whenever I need it!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize small craft supplies and notions to keep them handy and always at the ready!

When I put all these craft supplies in the jars, I was concerned about them fitting…and then I was concerned about getting them all back out! Because of the nice, wide mouths on the jars, they are super simple to fill and empty, and can even be used as open storage for pens, scissors, utensils and other taller items!

MagnetJar Spice Jars are a great way to sort and organize small craft supplies and notions to keep them handy and always at the ready!

If you can’t tell, I’m pretty smitten with these little jars and keep thinking of more and places to use them (office supplies, medicines). I do still love my basket for organizing my spices, but if you’re looking to take advantage of vertical space in your kitchen, home, office, or workspace…give these jars a try!

My 7 Favorite Baskets for Organizing Your Home

It is really no secret around here that my number one strategy for keeping our home picked up and organized is baskets. In fact, Greg would probably say I’ve never met a basket I didn’t like (and by the looks of our stash in the garage, I admit he’s right!) And while we certainly have our share of a variety of bins and baskets around our home, there are certain ones I find myself reaching for time and time again to hold a host of different things. If you’ve gotten on the basket bandwagon but don’t have the time or energy to shop around for just the right ones, I’ve got you covered! Today, I’m sharing my all-time favorite baskets for organizing!

Baskets come in every size, shape, color and quality. Here are my favorite 7 baskets for organizing every area of your home!

There is no shortage of good quality, versatile baskets on the market these days. In fact, bins and baskets are now available at almost every home store, in any style, and at every price point. There are certainly plenty to choose from, but not every basket out there is a good investment. What makes a good basket, you ask? First and foremost, it should hold what you need to store in an efficient, complete, sturdy and attractive way. Second, it should nicely fit onto whatever shelf, cubby, or spot you are going to place it without cramping or leaving too much wasted space. Third, they should be easy to use, and fourth, they should hold up to that use. Lastly, they should be easy to clean/maintain, a reasonable price, and easy to find. These 6 baskets, my friends, (plus one more bonus at the end) are all of these things: good-sized, sturdy, attractive, useful, easy-to-find, and budget-friendly!

Baskets come in every size, shape, color and quality. Here are my favorite baskets for organizing every area of your home!

Long-time readers of the blog will not be surprised to see the IKEA DRONA bins at the top of my list. One of my biggest priorities in picking baskets is that they need to fit wherever I am placing them just right – I hate wasted space! These bins are made to fit the IKEA Kallax (and former Expedit) shelves perfectly. These bins are wide, deep and tall, and I have found they hold so much stuff! Although they are made out of sturdy board covered in fabric, I’ve found they hold up pretty well to heavy items and a lot of child handling. We loved using them in our playroom so much in our last house…

IKEA DRONA bins are great for the playroom!

…that we added more shelves and bins to our playroom in this house! (See our playroom storage HERE and how to label these bins HERE!)

IKEA DRONA bins are great for the playroom!

After seeing them hold up so well to toys and rough play, I also invested in 8 more white ones to hold all of my fabric. I love how much they can hold and how they slide in and out of the shelves like drawers! (See how I made the labels HERE!)

IKEA DRONA bins are great for the craft room!

You don’t need IKEA Kallax shelves to use these bins…they stand up great on deep shelves as well!

IKEA Drona Bins on Open Shelves

There are a few down-sides to these bins. As I said, they are made of heavy-weight poster-like board and are covered in fabric, so they are not THE most durable baskets on the block. They are a great price ($6 each), but are primarily available at IKEA stores. Also, IKEA only carries certain colors, so if you have a particular look in mind for your space, you might be out of luck. If you’re willing to pay a bit more per bin, I did find this seller that has a few more color options!

My #2 choice is also no surprise around here, considering I use these Y-weave baskets from Target in almost every room in our house! These bins are sturdy and easily cleanable because of their strong plastic structure, and are available year-round in an array of colors and sizes! Both in this house and our last house, I have used the “Medium” size in our kitchen to hold everything from spices and tupperwares to sippy cups and cooking liquids!

A while back, Target carried a “Large” size of these baskets, but I can no longer find that option online. This slightly shorter version of the “X-Large” are great for holding any number of things and are strong enough to hold up to the bulk of towels and linens in the linen closet!

The “X-Large” version of these baskets are indeed my favorite! They are deep and tall and sturdy, and hold a lot more than you think they will! In our last house, I used them to hold gift wrap, embroidery supplies and more on open shelving…

And now those same bins hold the same kinds of supplies tucked into my IKEA Kallax Shelving. (You can see how I labeled them HERE!)

To me, the only downside of these baskets are the price…they are a bit on the steep side; but considering the quality and versatility of them, I find myself paying for them over and over again anyway. When I first discovered these, they were actually hard to find, but I now see them year-round and in all sorts of colors!

As I was making my list of favorite baskets, I was a little surprised I added this one to the list. I bought these baskets from Hobby Lobby for our command center primarily because they were the look I wanted (wicker) and the size I needed for our command center in our last house. In our current home, we don’t have this shelf setup, but I still find myself shuffling these baskets around the house. We are currently using one in the bathroom to hold small towels and wash cloths, a second in the kitchen to hold all of our coffee supplies, and the third on our bookcase to corral small booklets. Not only are they a great little size, but they are so sturdy and their texture is so great that they look awesome on their own. They don’t need a shelf or cubby, and function just as much as decor as they do basket! Pictured here is the “Small” size, but they are available in three different nesting sizes.

Baskets are ideal for making use of every inch of space!

I do love the look and sturdiness of these woven baskets, but there are a few downsides to them. First, they are pricey. Yes, Hobby Lobby regularly runs 50% off basket sales (so wait for those!), but even after the discount they felt expensive for their size and quality. Second, and even more annoying, is that Hobby Lobby doesn’t carry a huge stock. They only had one small basket on hand, and I had to “order” the other two to come in. If you have a lot of cubbies to fill, it might be hard and/or time-consuming to track down enough!

Once upon a time I thought milk crates were only for college kids, but when I went hunting for large, durable, wipeable and CHEAP baskets for our garage, these were what I came home with. And much to my surprise, we keep finding great uses for them! Sure, a milk crate is a milk crate, but I like that these have a dedicated place for a label (of course 🙂 My favorite thing about these (besides their size and cost) is that because they are plastic and have lots of holes, they are super simple to clean out. A quick spray down with the hose and 20 minutes in the sun and they are clean! We primarily use these out in the garage: on our work bench in our last house:

…and as our recycling bins in this house…

…but I also think they would work great for toys and other hardier items!

The next “basket” on my list are scrapbook cases designed to hold 12×12″ cardstock. I do indeed use these cases to hold all my 12×12 papers, but now and over the years, I have found they are useful to hold so much more! As you can see below, they are great for storing small, flat craft items like felt and Cricut cartridges; but I also find they work great for holding manuals, stickers and other paper embellishments, rolls of vinyl, and party supplies (banners, cupcake toppers, straws, etc). My Mom always used these to organize her in-progress quilts (all the blocks, directions, fabric swatches for one quilt in the same box), and I find myself using them to contain “in progress” projects too!

Scrapbook cases are great for holding all sorts of craft supplies, not just paper!

These boxes are cheap and easy-to-find; they stack and come in different colors; and can be used to store a variety of flat things. The only downside I found is that they aren’t the most durable against a lot of use and/or frequent moves!!

I hesitated to add my beloved flip-top plastic boxes to this round-up because mine (the version you see in the pictures below) were bought overseas in Okinawa (at their version of the Dollar Store). When there 10+ years ago, I stocked up on nearly 30 of them and continually use them all of our house. While you mostly likely won’t be able to get the exact same ones, these are quite similar…I think they are worth mentioning simple for their function!

I use these flip-top boxes to store almost all of my small craft supplies. From sewing notions and trims, to paints and glues, glitter and punches, I have twenty of them inside my craft cabinets alone. I love that they stack and they fit my selves perfectly, but I mostly love that they are clear! Quite often, I don’t like clear storage because they don’t conceal “messes,” which can be bothersome to the eye. But in the case of craft supplies, I love that I can look at the boxes and find just what I’m looking for, even if they aren’t labeled. The flip-tops allow me to quickly and easily access items without having to empty the box! And since I don’t have to take the lid off, it doesn’t get lost or thrown out by accident. I have found clear plastic boxes are best for craft supplies, but we also regularly use them for toys, snack items, and hygiene items.

Flip-top plastic boxes for craft supplies and toys

The only down-side I can see to these boxes is that they can add up if you need a lot. Like I said, I currently use close to 30 in our house, but I bought them at a $1/each. This flip-top version I found at Walmart are a good deal, but if you need a lot, it could be a big investment!

Last but not least, I had to include my beloved Target file boxes. I found these in the Target Dollar Spot years ago, and scooped them up more because they matched my house than because I had a use for them. It didn’t take me long to figure out how handy they were in the kitchen! Not only are they a perfect size for holding a variety of foods and snacks, but their slender and short size are ideal for tight cabinets and refrigerators!

I love that they have so many versatile uses, come with chalkboard labels and are super easy to clean out and stack for storage. So why was I reluctant to include them on my list? They aren’t the easiest to find. In fact, I haven’t seen them at Target in ages, and when I do, it’s usually just a few of them tucked away in a random bin in the Dollar Spot. My girlfriend just bought red ones, so I know they are still around…so I have my eyes peeled because I want more of them!

Phew! Did you make it? I wasn’t expecting this post to be so long, so thanks for hanging in there with me to the end! I do hope you found these links/insights useful! Do you agree/disagree with any of the baskets on my list? Do you have others that you turn to over and over? Share in the comments so we can all check them out!

I hope you all have a great weekend and a Happy Easter! Next week, I’m going to be a busy bee getting ready for Henry’s 5th birthday party (what?!?!?!), but I’ll be checking in on Tuesday and Thursday with some end-of-the-month business to tidy up! See you then!

Printable Project Planner

Of all the printable requests I receive, a project planner/checklist is one of the most common and frequent! While I tend to take on and complete projects in a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants fashion, I acknowledge that some projects (especially big ones!) would go a lot smoother with a little bit of planning and organization. Happy to fulfill reader requests and get my own system in order, I set out to design a simple little project checklist. A few hours and a bunch of new ideas later, my one-page checklist turned into an adorable 5-page project planner that I can’t wait to start using pronto!

The 1-Page Project Planner

I see myself using this one-sheet version a lot! Quite often, I have multiple projects going…all with different priorities, deadlines, supply needs, and time requirements. All too often, I find myself running back and forth to the store (sometimes multiple times a day!) because I didn’t plan out everything I needed for each project and what my schedule was for completing each one. This worksheet is now my one-stop shop for thinking through a project BEFORE I begin! Sure there will be modifications along the way, but allowing myself 10 minutes to work through my ideas (and assess the time and supplies I have!) will hopefully save me some headaches long the way! The one-page planner has these categories:

  • Description – Jot down a quick description of the project…include colors, textures, inspirations, and desired look/feel of the finished product
  • Schedule – I’m not suggesting you plan your project down to the minute, but determining what needs to happen when will allow you to anticipate longer tasks, dry times, etc.
  • Resources – Is there an online tutorial you’re going to follow? Are you going to buy hardware from a specific dealer? Here’s a great place to jot those resources down!
  • Notes – Use this space for anything you need to remember: paint colors, dry times, measurements, and more
  • Supplies – Detail out everything you will need to accomplish your project and be sure to check it off when you either 1) determine you already have it or 2) buy it!
  • Tasks – Write down each step of your project, preferably in order, to help you anticipate roadblocks or time sucks as to accomplishing your project!

The 5-Page Project Planner

The 5-page planner includes many of the same categories as the 1-page planner, but gives you the space to flesh out more details! The Inspiration page includes large boxes to sketch out or describe your project, list resources (books, stores, websites, magazines) that you can refer to during the project, as well as notes for measurements, paint colors, and more. A full-page To-Do List helps you track every single task on larger projects, and a full-page Notes sheet serves as a place to scribble down anything necessary!

Printable Project Planner

Both the Project Schedule and Project Budget are presented in single-page, landscape-formatted worksheets. There is plenty of space to detail everything you want and need to keep your project on track!

I couldn’t help designing a cute little cover for this printable kit. It’s available in full sheet size; I just trimmed my down and layered it over pretty paper for my binder cover.

Speaking of binders, I think these worksheets would be great loaded into a binder for easy access and reference (plus you can then easily add extra worksheets as you need them!) Print out a set of worksheets for each project you’re working on. Use dividers to organize your plans for each and every project you have going on!

Another advantage of using a binder system is that it can become a one-stop shop for everything and anything you need to accomplish your project. Tape on paint swatches and fabric samples to the inspiration pages…

…and include page protectors to hold receipts for any project supplies! When it comes time to return an item or tally the final budget, you won’t have to go looking for lost receipts!

I am especially excited to have this printable kit ready to go as we gear up to move into our next home and take on some new room makeovers. With a few copies of this kit printed out and loaded into a binder, I’ll be able to track ideas, plans, samples, and costs for each room…to hopefully stay on track and stay a little more sane as I work through a long list of projects!
