You can always tell how excited I am about a project/post by the number of photos I include! Well, settle in and get comfortable today because I have quite a few to show you of my latest furniture transformation!

I stumbled upon this “beauty” at our local Re-Store way back in early March. While I was on the hunt for a new project piece, I’m not sure I would have given this baby a second glance if I had not literally just seen Sarah’s incredible transformation of a similar piece. Even with no concrete plan in place, I didn’t hesitate to fork over the $60 they were asking for it and hauled her home!

This giant unit (measuring over 6′ long and weighing a TON!!) sat in my garage for a good long while before I got around to working on her. By the time I bought my paints and got started, I realized how truly bad shape she was in. She was covered in sticky residue from tape and who knows what else (!!!!) and had major major scratches all along the tops of all four doors. Whooops, didn’t notice that when I bought her! A really good cleaning with soap water and a lot of Gu-Gone worked wonders; and I remedied all the scratched surfaces with liberal amounts of wood filler and sanding.

I followed my usual process to make over this unit. I started with 2 coats of Zinsser 123 Primer (rolled and brushed on), including a good sanding and wipe down after each coat. The frame of the credenza received 4 (yes, 4!) coats of Benjamin Moore Advanced High Gloss in Super White. The doors were given a two-tone treatment in BM Advanced Yellow Green (the darker green) and Tropical Seaweed Green (the lighter green), three coats of each color. The hardware and rails were given two coats of Rust-oleum Primer and Paint in Satin White.

Just a quick comment on the paints. I was really, really, really excited to try out the BM Advanced paint on this piece, having read so many wonderful things about its coverage, self-leveling and hard finish. I had read over and over that it was okay to apply it with a brush, but I found that even in the right temps and without over brushing, I was left with pretty bad brush marks (that never really went away with each coat). Further, I feel like with 2 coats of primer and 4 coats of the BM Advanced, I can still see hints of dark stain on the top of the credenza. It might just be my imagination, but it certainly didn’t cover the way I thought it would/should. I learned my lesson, though, so with the doors, I brushed on the paint but then rolled over it with a small foam roller before letting the paint dry. Boy oh boy, did I get the most beautiful, clean, smooth, and hard finish on my doors. In the days and weeks after the unit was finished, it continued to cure and get stronger and smoother. Overall, I am super happy with this paint and can’t wait to use it on more projects!

Okay, enough blibber blabber…are you ready to see the end result?

Here we gooooooooo…….

YOWZA, right?!?!?! I mean, I love me some bold color and pattern, but I’ve never gone quite this bold on anything. I have to say, though, I just loooovvveee it. It’s so bright and fresh and fun.

I love that I was fearless with this project. I so wanted a white frame and green color-blocked doors and when I tried to talk myself into something more neutral, I couldn’t get on board. I decided to follow my gut. I picked shades of green that I loved and just went with it. It’s certainly a huge, dramatic, bold statement in Henry’s room, but I have to say, I am just over the moon about it!

When I first bought this piece, I wasn’t exactly sure where it was going to go. However, I was looking for one more piece to balance out Henry’s big boy room layout and had a hunch this might do the trick. The more I thought about it, I loved the idea of extra storage in Henry’s room, as well as a place to have all of his books and stuffies at his level (this one was key, I really wanted his books down on his level). Sure, an office credenza wasn’t the most logical option, but it actually works super well. Henry LOVES those sliding doors, and I love the focal point it has become in his room!

A few animal accessories helped tie the unit into the rest of the room’s theme. Ms. Phanny (our elephant) was given some orange shoes (at least that’s what Henry says!). I’ll show you how I did it next week!

The lamp is from Target, as are the little balsa wood boxes with bright blue tops that I am using as book ends (on clearance for $2.50 each). The rhino was a basement find and the elephant is from HomeGoods. You can find my roman shade tutorial here and the chevron throw pillow tutorial here. The pom pom pillow tutorial is coming up soon!

I am literally working (probably right this very minute) on a few more little details for this corner before I can show you how this little nook will (hopefully) come together. For now, one last look at this bold and funky transformation!

What do you think? Have I lost my marbles or do you love it?
