Lamp Makeover: A Touch of Gold!

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and are looking forward to a patriotic-fun-filled week! As I mentioned last week, I have been a busy bee transforming our neglected Craft Room/Home Office into a chic and inspiring space. While I should probably start the transformation reveals with some bigger projects, I couldn’t wait to show you this quick little update I made to some very old lamps! Friends, consider me on the gold bandwagon!

We bought these lamps ages ago, while we were living overseas. They came in a box of three. And while they aren’t the greatest quality or design, they’ve proven simple and useful additions to every home we’ve had so far. Here is how they started out:

Over the years, I’ve tried my hand at embellishing them with fabric (below left) and ribbon (below right). Neither look was quite right for me.

As I started pulling the craft room together, I found myself reaching for some gold touches here and there. Then remembering I had picked up this can of gold spray paint back during the holidays, I thought I’d try to update the lamps one more time.

I didn’t snap photos of how I sprayed the lamp bases, but it wasn’t very hard. I removed the lamp shade and harp and then taped off the cord and bulb socket. I primed the bases with Zinsser 123 Primer and gave them each two light coats of Valspar Metallic Gold spray paint.

I then picked up some of the MarthaLiving Metallic Paint in gold from Home Depot. I had been wanting to try this stuff, so I grabbed a jar and plan to use it on a variety of things! My first experiment was to paint the rims of the lamp shade.

I didn’t tape the shade off or anything. I just slowly and carefully painted the rims, and by the end of naptime (they literally took me about 30 minutes), I had two updated lamps!

Not too bad for lamps that were otherwise headed for a yard sale!

I only snapped photos of one lamp, but I transformed a pair. You’ll see how to two look together when I reveal our new desk setup!!

Have a great week! See you back here Thursday with a project to celebrate the 4th!!

  1. I find it funny how fashion and interior design repeat it self. I don't think of myself as old but when they say that the stuff I wore in my early 30's is retro (I'm 51) I start to think…wait a min. When I got married in 1988, everything was gold, but I loved silver too so my wedding picture is in a sad looking silver frame. I wish the problem was that it was tarnished but it's not real silver and looks sad. Hmm..maybe I should paint it gold? lol

I love how you updated your lamp set.
